David penned a Hebrew song which we read in our Bibles as Psalm 103:1-5. “Praise the Lord, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Let’s look at each of these benefits of having a love-relationship with God.
1. God forgives all my sins.
The benefits of having our sins forgiven do not only free us from guilt, but they also free us from the fear of future judgment. Romans 8:1 – “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
2. God heals all my diseases.
On the surface, it would seem like no one who follows Christ will get sick for very long. But God doesn’t say WHEN He’ll heal all our diseases. For all of eternity in Heaven, we’ll have bodies without limitations or pains.1 Corinthians 15:51-52 – “Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.”
3. God redeems my life from the pit.
Because of sin, the condition of people is like we are all caught in a pit of quicksand, slowly pulling us down to death. When we receive Jesus, He pulls us out and gives us a rock to stand on. Psalm 40:2 – “He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.”
4. God crowns me with love and compassion.
Not only have I been forgiven, but God has elevated all Christ-followers to the position of royalty. His crown for each of us does not consist of jewels and gemstones, but His love and compassion. These are the hallmarks of His relationship with all those who receive His Son. Ephesians 2:6 – “And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.”
5. God satisfies my desires with good things.
It’s not that I don’t sin anymore, but God has changed my desires from the inside out. The sin that I once thought was enjoyable, He has replaced it with more of a desire to please Him. God wants me to avoid sin, not only because it displeases Him, but it is also destructive to me. God has convinced me that walking in obedience to Him is the most positive step I can take.Psalm 128:1 – Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways.
If you haven’t become a Christ-follower yet, all these benefits await you. And the beauty is that Jesus has already done everything necessary to deal with our sin. He died, was resurrected, and returned to Heaven. But He has the capacity to respond to your invitation to take up residence in your life and be your new King. I hope you’ll do that soon.
